Removal instructions for Pretty Park

    4Help provides these instructions to assist you in the removal of this computer virus.  If these instructions do not remove the virus from your system, then 4Help recommends that you contact your computer vendor. The use of up-to-date anti-virus software will help prevent your computer from becoming infected with viruses.

Overview:

  • Repair the Windows registry
  • Update your virus definitions

 

  1. You MUST print these instructions before you proceed with the virus removal. You will need the printed instructions because your computer may not boot into Windows during parts of the repair process.
    • Select 'Print...' from the 'File' menu.
  2. Go to the 'Start' button and select 'Run'.
  3. Type command.com and press 'OK'.
  4. Change to the Windows directory by:

    If you are running Windows NT, by typing cd c:\winnt .

    If you are running Windows 95/98, by typing cd c:\windows.

  5. Type copy regedit.exe regedit.com to make a backup copy of your registry editor.
  6. Type regedit.com.
  7. Change the (default) value in HKEY CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command to "%1" %*.
    1. In the left-hand pane, click on the + next to 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT'.

    2. Click on the + next to 'exefile'. (Note: Scroll past '.exe'; the list will eventually sort alphabetically again, and continue to 'exefile'.)

    3. Click on the + next to 'shell'.

    4. Click on the + next to 'open'.

    5. Click on the folder 'command'.

    6. In the right-hand pane, double-click on word '(Default)'.

    7. Change the value to "%1" %* (make sure to type the quotes).

    8. Click 'OK' to save the changes.

    9. In the left-hand pane, scroll back to the top.

    10. Click on the - next to 'HKEY_CLASS_ROOT'.

  8. Change the (default) value in 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command' to "%1" %*
    1. In the left-hand pane, click on the + next to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

    2. Click on the + next to 'Software'.

    3. Click on the + next to 'CLASSES'.

    4. Click on the + next to 'exefile'. (Note: Scroll past '.exe'; the list will eventually sort alphabetically again, and continue to 'exefile'.)

    5. Click on the + next to 'shell'.

    6. Click on the + next to 'open'.

    7. Click on the folder 'command'.

    8. In the right-hand pane, double-click on word '(Default)'.

    9. Change the value to "%1" %* (make sure to type the quotes).

    10. Click 'OK' to save the changes.

  9. From the 'Registry' menu, select 'Exit'.

  10. Restart your computer and make sure you can run all your programs. If you can, you may safely delete the 'regedit.com' file you created.
  11. Ensure that you have recent virus definitions that will prevent future infections:

    Known Issues:

    • In the registry, the file associations are alphabetical.  Items starting with a period (.) will be listed first, and then regular alphabetical order follows.
    • Do not edit the registry entry '.exe'.  Only edit the two instances of 'exefile' as described above.
