Using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac:

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac is a third-party program dedicated to fighting adware. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware can identify and remove malicious adware from your computer. When your computer becomes infected, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware can provide the needed assistance to remove the infection and restore the machine back to optimum performance. They provide this FREE version. Virginia Tech has used this product and has not had problems. However, THIS IS A USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

If you are using MAC OSX 10.7.x or before, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware does not work, you may try the manual instructions:

  1. Go to and select the Download button.

  2. When you download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (by clicking on the Download button above), you should find a file named: MBAM-Mac-x.x.x.x.dmg in your Downloads folder. (If you have changed the folder your browser saves downloads to, look there instead.) Double-click this file.

  3. After double-clicking the MBAM-Mac-x.x.x.x.dmg file, you should see a "disk" named Malwarebytes Anti-Malware appear on the desktop and/or the sidebar of any Finder windows (depending on your settings). In addition, a window should open showing the following:
    In this window, drag the Malwarebytes-Mac app (the blue, circular icon) onto the icon for the Applications folder and release the mouse. This will copy the Malwarebytes-Mac app into the Applications folder.

  4. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is now installed, and can be opened from the Applications folder.

  5. From the Application Folder double-click The Malwarebytes Anti-Malware icon the following screen appears:

  6. Get the lastest Adware signatures, go to the Menu bar and select Scanner and then Update Signatures

  7. Click the Scan button to immediately scan your Mac for components of any known adware.

  8. After the scan finishes, if your system is clean, you will be told that nothing was found. Otherwise, a window will open showing the adware that was detected:

  9. The checkboxes allow you to specify which items are to be removed. (By default, only files that are definitively bad will be checked.) Clicking the Remove Selected Items button will remove any items that are checked, and will leave any that are not checked in place. Removal of some items will require entry of your admin password. The password request is provided by Mac OS X, and Malwarebytes-Mac will never actually see your password.

  10. If any item are removed you will see the message.

  11. You may need to restart the computer for some removed items.
